Our Story: Where healing met the land
Where healing met the land
In October 2020, during a difficult season in my life, I found myself standing on a piece of underutilized land at our rural home.
As I looked across it, a question came to me:
Could this land heal me?
Could nature, in its quiet wisdom, help restore not only the body, but the mind and spirit too? And if it could, what would it take for me to learn how to receive that gift?
I didn't know the answers. But I knew I wanted to find them.
So I began with the soil.
I learned to listen to it, understand what it needed, and nourish it without forcing it. I began growing food for our family, learning how to cultivate healthy soil so that it could give us food that was safe, nourishing, and full of life.
And as I worked the land, something beautiful began to happen.
The land was nourishing me too.
I started spending more time outside, simply listening to the wind, the birds, the insects, and the quiet rhythms of nature. There was a stillness there that I had forgotten existed.
And then there was the joy of working with the soil. Planting a seed, caring for it, and watching life emerge gave me a sense of fulfilment I could hardly explain.
I began to understand that perhaps healing isn't always about searching for something new. Sometimes, it is about returning to something ancient, to the earth, to quiet, to nourishment, and to the natural rhythms of life.
A dream began to take shape: a mindful, self-sufficient homestead where our family could live more intentionally, grow food with care, and nurture a deeper connection with the land and one another.
My husband, David, believed in that dream with me. With his love and support, what began as a deeply personal journey slowly grew into something bigger than our family.
It became Kagira Ridge Farm.
Today, Kagira is a reflection of what the land taught me during a time when I needed healing most.
We believe that healthy food begins with healthy soil; that caring for the land is inseparable from caring for ourselves; and that the way we grow and eat our food can be an invitation to live more consciously.
The food we grow now finds its way into the homes of people who care about where their food comes from, how the soil is treated, and the deeper meaning of nourishment.
For me, Kagira Ridge Farm is not simply a farm.
It is where a question became a journey.
It is where I discovered the healing power of slowing down, putting my hands in the soil, listening to nature, and nurturing life.
And it is my hope that what began as my own journey back to wholeness can become an invitation for others to reconnect with their food, with the land, with nature, and perhaps, ultimately, with themselves. - Lucy Kawira, Founder, Kagira Ridge Farm
